Amazing coincidence

The magician selects a number of cards from the deck and splits them into two piles, a volunteer is asked to select one of the piles, the magician takes the other.

The volunteer is asked to shuffle his packet of cards as the magician does the same.

The magician then proceeds to place his cards face down on the table in a random pattern. The volunteer is asked to place one of their cards onto each of the cards on the table - in any order they choose.

N
w the volunteer is asked to indicate one of the pairs. The magician picks up the indicated pairs and reveals their faces (say 7 Clubs and Ace Diamonds), then replaces the pair face down on the table.

Offering his upturned palm, the magician asks that the volunteer place the individual pairs onto his palm in any order that the volunteer chooses.

Once all the cards on his palm the magician asks that the volunteer makes as many complete cuts of the cards as they wish.

Once the volunteer is satisfied that the cards are completely mixed the magician deals the cards (still face down) into two piles.

At this point the magician recounts all the actions that just took place :-

Free choice of cards

Cards shuffled

Random placement of the cards

Free choice of a pair of cards

Random collection

Multiple cuts

The volunteer is asked to confirm these actions.

The magician now turns over each pile of cards and spreads them face-up asking " Do you notice anything 'special' about the two rows ? "

The 7 of Clubs is in a row of all Red cards and the Ace of Diamonds is in a row of all Black cards.

Is that an Amazing Coincidence or what !

***

Before reading any further, once again read the explanation above, just to fix in your mind how impossible - given the actions taken - that it would be to have a red card appear in a row of black cards and also to have, at the same time, a black card appear in a row of red cards.

Preparation.

This feat of card magic is self working provided that the actions described above are followed - BUT it does require a little preparation, concentration and cunning handling !

At the commencement of the trick you must have 16 cards - 8 red and 8 black - in that order on the top of the deck. I generally say "I require a number a magical cards for the next trick" I then arrange the cards - no one will know (or suspect) what you are doing.

Once the cards are in order deal out 8 cards into one pile then the next 8 into another pile (important). You then follow the performance notes as described above.

At the climax of the trick (immediately after the cards have been cut by the volunteer) the cards are dealt into two piles BUT this time you must deal alternately (ie; left, right, left, right) very important.

You are now ready to stun your audience ! turn over and spread the cards.
