Smack the Stack

Effect: You are told to pick a card from the fan and then replace it after memorizing it. I cut the cards and do a special shuffle and then hold the deck out to my side. I drop the cards into my other hand and hold two. I keep doing this until I hold five. I ask you if any of these are your cards and you say, "no." Then I close the fan and shuffle the five around a bit. Then I ask you to hold them, I smack them and you have your card in your hand, face up.

Card Trick: You, the mag
cian, fan out the cards and tell someone to pick a card. After they do, let them show it around or whatever they want. Then have them replace it and you use your favorite method to get that card to the top. You then hold the cards, long ways and in your left hand, out to your right side. Have your left thumb on top with your four fingers on the bottom, or whatever is comfortable. Hold them so they can see the bottom card. Then, in one fluent motion, reach up with your index and pull the top card back about one inch, put your middle finger under the one inch over hang and turn the card so it is perpendicular to the deck, with the short side of the card touching the back of what is now the top card (practice this because they CAN'T see you do this); and grab the bottom card with your thumb. Realize the deck from your left hand and you should be holding it with your right with their card hidden behind the deck so they can't see it. Then you pinch the deck, jerk it down, and catch the deck in your left hand. By doing this, you peel off the top card and the bottom card (Now they are the ones hiding their card). After you do this, put the deck back up to your right hand and do this again, but this time, you still have the first two cards and you peel of the bottom one. Now you have three cards in a fan, hiding the chosen card. Do this two more time so you'll have five cards. Ask them if any of these are their card and they'll say, "NO!" Then set the deck down, come up with your left hand and close the fan, while you're doing this, take the chosen card and turn it back even with the rest, but so that it is facing the opposite direction. Then hold the six-card stack back in front of you with the chosen card facing down. Take three cards off the top and put them on the bottom, still facing up. Then turn the stack over and take two cards off the bottom and put them on the top. Tell the victim to hold out his hand and hold the stack between his index finger and his middle finger. Make sure he is holding them tightly. Then smack the stack really hard and the top five cards will slide away leaving the chosen card, face-up. If the victim is holding the stack really, really, really tight, then you'll probably have to smack the stack more than once.
